A Midsummer Night’s Táin

For the past couple of months Gúna Nua has been working with amateur drama groups in the Sligo/Tyrone area passing on skills and devising a new show. The culmination of this project was A Midsummer Night’s Táin written by Artistic Director Paul Meade.

On a midsummer night, the local drama group has gathered for the first read-through of its new play. It’s a modern retelling of the famous Irish mythical story of the Táin Bó Cúailgne. Through a barrage of bickering, egos, tweets and texting, the Director tries to impose his will on the cast. Gradually, the play begins to take shape and it’s a fantastical mash-up of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Playboy of the Western World and The Táin.

There were two performances of this play:

  • Cliffoney Hall, Sligo on Wednesday, 3rd July at 8PM
  • Strule Arts Centre, Omagh on Thursday,  4th July at 8PM

This project was funded by the PEACE III Programme managed for the Special European Union Progreammes Body by Co. Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee.
